Though perhaps AR didn't have the resources to refine/execute their sundrop process before KS launch.
AR was confident the kickstarter would be a success; they did not expect such a huge success nor that so many people would choose sundrop. The original technique, which would have allowed them to do a good pre-shade on the number of miniatures they estimated, did not work for the actual number they had to sun-drop. As a result Adrian set up a whole system in the basement (there were some KS updates showing him working out how to do it). This gave the Core Box quality but took a lot of time, as it was a single person in a basement. With all the complaints, AR reached out to Eastar (the factory that produces the game) and they set up a sun-drop system at the factory to be able to do larger numbers of miniatures in a shorter time.
So it moved from plan: a painting studio pre-shading some hundreds of miniatures to reality 1: one painter setting up a system to pre-shade thousands of miniatures, to reality 2: factory workers pre-shading thousands of miniatures.
