Building the temple is just as powerful imo, especially if not contested by others. It gives a good amount of points and the favor cards can be really powerful. My recent play I went heavy at building the temple and only built 1 building (-1 resource when constructing the temple) and I lost by 2 points from the other player who went building-heavy + exchanging resources for points. And I do remember making a couple non-ideal placements where I could have put myself ahead at the end.
