Oh my. I've played GP solo at least 15 times and just realized I've been doing directional selection incorrectly. I would zig-zag starting from either the top or bottom depending on the icon. Right to left, left to right, right to left.
I don't think it makes a huge difference to the end results, but still annoys me a bit.
