The way it all balances out, is due to the dominoes being placed in ranking order (numbers on the back, from top to bottom), so at the start, the earlier players to act start with the "worse" pieces.ie. The first player that get's to choose, starts on one of the "worst" pieces on the table. Also, they have one of the harder decisions of the game... Do they take one of the "Better" pieces on offer, and go further down the turn order... Or, perhaps they bide their time at the top...
You could definitely argue that the last player to act doesn't have a choice.... but they also just got one of the "best" pieces on the table.
