Until I could get the upgrade kit, I played using the 2nd edition rules and the changes to Gandalf's Guide ability and the Witch-king's muster conditions and Sorcer ability (I believe you can go to the Designer's Notes articles on Ares website for images of the cards).

The relevant character changes amount to these: Gandalf allows you to draw a new Event card of the same type (character or strategy) when he is the Guide and you use an Event die; and the Witch-king's card draw must be a card of the same type as the one the Shadow player just played. Also, at least one Free Peoples nation must be at war before you can muster the Witch-king.
