I brought out my copy and a measuring tape. All the castles are in the trey with the duchy overlays, and take up maybe 10-15% of the area of that tray. The tray is 3.5 cm tall, or almost 1.5". The game box is 16cm tall, or close to 6.5"
Removing the castle miniatures would have saved zero space in all dimensions, as the stack of inlays/boards is the limiting factor height wise. It IS possible the box could be shrinked a little bit if everything was redesigned from scratch, but even with the castles removed, there wouldn't be all that much dead space.
