Having played the token version, I cannot imagine wanting or needing the mini version. The tokens seem perfect for stacking and having your units out on the board and everyone being able to see who is who.

Having said that, the way FF has managed this campaign, including obviously having printed a ton of the token base games and expansions, on top of the recently announced Monumental Duel, suggests they are potentially selling other stuff, hopefully to help finance getting KS backers their stuff.
