That's right, The base game itself is quite a handful to grind through the first couple times and I feel you do not need to add modules yet. However, for your first game, definitely use "grand buildings" (always). If you still you want to add more, use something really light like the "pope" card. Commanders is a good one to add once you feel pretty comfortable with a game.
