OP, can you also explain in more detail how you separated companions?
What region was the Fellowship's last known position?
To what region did you move the companions? (remember they all have to move together and end in the same region. You cannot split them to go their own ways with a single character die)
Where are those companions now? i.e. how are you utilizing them outside of the FSP?

It sounds like you are playing online? Does this online implementation properly remove your casualties from the game, or do you have to do that yourself?
Are you remembering that if the defender retreats into a siege that combat ends immediately? The attacker must spend another action die to attack again. Therefore, it (almost) makes no sense to fight a field battle if the defending force is 5 or fewer units (remember, leaders don't count).

I put them all out in one bunch 3 steps from Rivendell. Then later I separated them into smaller groups. This seemed really weird to me that I could take them all out like that. One went down to get activated as Aragorn. Gimli joined a battle and retread into siege. Two others are outside a very weak sp area waiting for my army to approach. But I saw no reason to keep any of them back (except for the 2 hobbits who are seemingly useless on the board) I don’t play online. And yes, I am aware of the rules of only moving characters apart with future rolls.
