Sorry you’ve had a bad experience. This game really doesn’t do itself any favours with how it is presented.

We absolutely love this game and still play it after several years and many sessions.

IMHO what you need to do is play with more than three players. We usually play at least five and preferably several more. We also always play all advanced rules. Humble beginnings actually help balance the Advancements perfectly against weapon and shield development and doesn’t extend the game very much (which may sound counterintuitive). The luck factor in exploration is also mitigated by Humble Beginnings and we’ve seen bad luck even out and several different approaches to winning being viable.

Incidentally, the Unofficial Complete Rulebook (on the files page) is written with all advanced rules implemented and a number of unofficial (but thematic and play tested) factions added so that you can have larger games or just more variety. It also contains unofficial rules for the Borg that work (in contrast to the incomplete official rules) allowing for solo, two player or just a more challenging situation for multiplayer games.
