It's not, actually. If burning meant that you got power faster (say, if gaining 6 power after burning resulted in 4 power available vs 3 if you hadn't burned) then choosing when to burn would be important. As it stands, however, there are two times when burning power matters:

1) If you need the power NOW.

2) If you gain more power than you can hold.

#1 gives you power early but not faster.

#2 is the only case where you fall behind in power. This is the risk of burning early.
