Both the attacker and defender can use cannons on cards in their hand. In doing so, they play those cards to the table. For the active player, this means they will discard that card at the end of the turn. For the defender, the played card will remain in play until it reaches that player's next turn, and then is discarded at the end with the rest. Both players will be able to use any other abilities on the card during their own turn.

As much as i understood from the rules it is also being that the defender would be able to use the cannons from the cards he did play for this fight also for another fight in case he is going to be attacked by another player and even once again in his own turn in case he is being the attacker that time.
